Chairman’s Message
In the July 2007 issue of Safety+ Health magazine from the National Safety Council, there was an article that caught my eye. It was headlined, “Work. Wound. Repeat.”

The essence of the article, and underlying theory, was that accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, but some employees are more prone to injury than others. A popular theory is that 80 percent of worksite injuries or accidents are related to 20 percent of the employees -- also known as the 80/20 Rule.

It’s a phenomenon some experts call “injury repeaters.” They believe personality just may play a role in work safety.

So I reviewed our company’s OSHA 300 Log going back seven years and looked for a pattern or for repeated names and found some interesting results. No such repeat pattern was evident to me.

However, I did find issues that raised the question: “Are we doing enough in this area?” These issues provide real-world experience from which to learn and now we have something else to discuss during training sessions and toolbox meetings.

Reviewing previous incidents does have value. I urge you to review your OSHA 300 Logs. Your review might open your eyes to a trend or an overlooked subject that should be discussed.

Be safe out there!
