From the Office
The onset of autumn always makes me assess how I am doing in many aspects of my life. In South Dakota this transitory season between summer and winter can last for months. It can also be over in a few weeks with snow covering the ground before Halloween. That’s probably why I feel compelled to make some determinations of what has been accomplished and what has not. Because I know the coming change is not going to wait for me.
The change in seasons impacts NATE members both literally and figuratively. Dropping temperatures add to the list of hazards. From becoming reacquainted with frost – and eventually ice – on the towers, to the need to break out your warmer clothes, autumn should cause everyone to reexamine how they view the job site. Some hazards change with the seasons. Now is the time to discuss them during your tailgate sessions.
But there is something else represented by that chill in the air. Again, maybe this is just part of having grown up on the frozen prairie, but autumn always reminds me of the harsh reality that nothing is guaranteed in this life – a reminder that now is the time to be prepared.
Where’s all this going? This change of seasons is an excellent reminder for everyone to rededicate themselves to the goal of keeping tower technicians safe. Are you making the best use of the resources NATE has made available? Are you following the safety practices that have been established by NATE? Are you availing yourself of the information conveyed through the educational sessions that are part of each year’s NATE conference and exposition? Are you making sure everyone in your company is actively practicing safety?
I know I’ve said this before, but if you knew today that someone was going to be involved in a serious accident tomorrow, you’d do whatever you could to prevent that from happening. Don’t take the chance on missing that opportunity. Use today as your chance to reinforce safety in your company. You will never regret it.
