A Message from the Chairman
Writing this article and preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving Day 2001 with my family and loved ones, I'm wondering how other people will be giving thanks this year. The recent terrorist attack on the United States and its people has caused a great deal of sorrow, grief, anxiety, frustration, and anger in our country. On the one hand, we as Americans must never forget the terrible losses and sacrifices that have taken place, but also remember with pride, the heroism and commitment we are witnessing, and for some participating in, to reclaim a healthy democratic way of life for all Americans. Foremost for myself, I'm thankful for being a United States citizen. We enjoy freedoms too numerous to list, that many countries around the world do not share. We enjoy the freedom to be part of and actually assist our government function day-to-day. As citizens of the United States of America we are capable of overcoming any adversity. Second, I'm thankful for the many professionals in our country that are more than willing to rush into any disaster, risking their lives to save others. The firemen, policemen, emergency response personnel, and many others continue to display courage and sacrifices beyond description every day in their jobs. Third, I'm thankful that our country has shown and continues to show great resolve. It took a very short time for our leaders to come together, assess the situation and begin implementing a plan. A plan not only for the search and rescue of survivors and victims, but how we as Americans will move forward. I do not believe any other country in the world could have handled this situation as well as we have and will continue to do. Finally, I'm thankful for being part of such a great people. People of the United States are always willing to help in any way when a disaster has occurred, whether in the United States, or for that matter in other countries. This includes the outpouring of support and generosity to the victims, survivors, and anyone else connected with this tragedy. This selfless determination and generosity demonstrates the boundless strength of the American people. No words will ever adequately describe the loss our country endured on September 11. Together we will stand tall and proud. Together we will have cause to give thanks. By: Kevin Hayden, NATE Chairman
